Methodology

These findings have been analyzed through the lens of feminist rhetorical theory: how Igler’s time at Belmont and her eventual career as an attorney disrupted patriarchal power structures. The goal is to explore the scrapbook as not just a passive, domestic activity for women in this time period, but as a site of political engagement. This is inspired by Christensen’s description of the scrapbook as a uniquely feminine aesthetic form, but also Hayter’s description of the scrapbook as feminist inventiveness and agency.
